Topsoil is commonly sold by the cubic yard, but the advertised price per yard is only one part of the amount you may pay. A useful budget starts with the required volume, then adds delivery, minimum-order rules and a sensible allowance for grading or settling.
Start with the required cubic yards
Measure the surface area in square feet and choose the finished soil depth in inches. Convert depth to feet, multiply by area and divide cubic feet by 27. If the project needs 9.3 cubic yards before allowance, ordering exactly 9.3 leaves no room for uneven ground or measurement error. A modest allowance may bring the planning quantity closer to 10 or 10.5 yards.
Costs that may sit outside the advertised price
