Start with area and depth
For a rectangle, multiply length by width to get square feet. For an irregular lawn or bed, divide the shape into smaller rectangles, calculate each section, then add them together. Convert the planned depth from inches to feet before calculating volume.

Bulk soil vs. bags
Small repairs can be practical with bags, but larger projects usually become easier to compare in cubic yards. Bag volume varies by brand, so use the actual bag size printed on the product rather than assuming every bag is the same.
