Fill dirt and topsoil solve different problems. Fill dirt is commonly used to build volume and establish grade, while topsoil is selected for the upper layer where lawns or plants need a suitable growing medium. Using premium topsoil for deep structural fill can waste money; planting directly into poor fill can produce disappointing results.

A project may need both
A deep low area may be brought near grade with suitable fill, compacted in controlled lifts, then finished with a topsoil layer. The exact section depends on drainage, intended use and local conditions. Structural or load-bearing fills require more than a landscape calculator.
Calculate the layers separately
Do not average fill and topsoil into one depth if they will be purchased at different prices or densities. Calculate the bulk fill volume, include compaction allowance, then calculate the topsoil surface layer independently.
