A ton measures weight and a cubic yard measures volume, so there is no fixed conversion for every topsoil product. Moisture, sand content, organic matter and screening all change bulk density.
Use the supplier’s density
If a supplier states that its topsoil weighs 1.1 tons per cubic yard, divide tons by 1.1 to estimate yards. One ton would equal about 0.91 cubic yard under that assumption. If another blend weighs 0.8 ton per yard, one ton equals 1.25 yards.
Calculate volume first for landscape projects
Area and depth determine how much space must be filled. Calculate cubic yards from the project dimensions, then convert to estimated tons only when the quote or delivery is weight-based.
Do not plan vehicle payload from a generic conversion
Ask the supplier for the expected loaded weight of the actual product. Wet soil can be substantially heavier, and rated payload limits should not be checked with a broad planning estimate.
