A cubic yard measures volume, while a ton measures weight. There is no universal one-to-one conversion for topsoil because wet soil can weigh much more than dry soil, and blends containing sand, compost or organic matter have different densities.
Why the number changes
- Moisture: water adds weight without changing the ordered volume in a simple way.
- Composition: sandy or mineral-heavy soil may be denser than an organic blend.
- Screening: particle size and included debris affect bulk density.
- Compaction: loose delivered soil and compacted in-place soil do not occupy the same volume.
Use supplier data whenever weight matters
A calculator can provide a planning estimate by multiplying cubic yards by an assumed tons-per-yard value. For delivery limits, trailers, driveways or equipment capacity, ask the supplier for the expected weight of the actual product and moisture condition. Do not size a vehicle or exceed a payload rating using a generic internet conversion.
Volume is usually better for ordering
Landscape suppliers frequently sell topsoil by the cubic yard because the project itself is defined by area and depth. Calculate the volume first. Convert to estimated tons only when comparing a weight-based quote or planning logistics.
Example
If a project requires 8 cubic yards and the selected planning density is 1.0 ton per yard, the estimate is 8 tons. If the real delivered blend is wetter or denser, the actual weight can differ. The estimate is useful for budgeting, but the supplier figure should control transportation decisions.
