There is no single correct topsoil depth for every project. The useful number depends on whether soil is being added as a light surface layer, used to establish new turf, placed in a planting bed or used to correct low areas. Existing soil condition matters as much as the planned use.

Small depth changes create large volume changes
Across 1,000 square feet, every additional inch adds about 83.3 cubic feet, or roughly 3.09 cubic yards, before waste or settling allowance. That is why guessing between two and four inches can double the material order. Measure several points when the surface is uneven and use a defensible average.
Do not use topsoil to hide a drainage problem
Adding soil changes finished elevations and can redirect water. Keep soil below siding, vents and other building details, and preserve drainage away from structures. Significant grading work may need local professional guidance rather than a simple quantity estimate.
Plan the finished depth
Calculator inputs should represent the intended finished layer. Loose soil can settle after placement, while overly compacted soil may perform poorly for planting. Discuss settlement and preparation with the supplier or installer, especially for deep fills or structural grading.
