Drainage gravel behind a retaining wall helps water move toward the designed outlet instead of building pressure behind the wall. Quantity is usually estimated as a rectangular backfill zone, but the final detail also involves pipe, outlets, filter fabric and the wall manufacturer’s requirements.
Estimate the gravel zone
For a simple planning estimate, multiply wall length by drainage-zone width and gravel height. Convert cubic feet to cubic yards, then add a modest allowance for uneven excavation and handling.
Example
A 30-foot wall with a one-foot-wide drainage zone filled to three feet has a theoretical volume of 90 cubic feet, or 3.33 cubic yards. This does not automatically define a safe wall detail; it only estimates material for the assumed zone.
Drainage is a system
- Free-draining aggregate provides a path for water.
- Drain pipe and outlets move collected water to an appropriate discharge point.
- Filter fabric may help separate soil from drainage aggregate where specified.
- Surface grading should keep unnecessary runoff away from the wall.
When a calculator is not enough
Tall walls, surcharge loads, slopes, poor soil, groundwater and structures near the wall can require permits or professional engineering. Follow the block-system documentation and local requirements. Never treat a gravel quantity as structural design approval.
