How much paver sand you need depends on the project area and the specified finished bedding depth. Bedding sand below the pavers is calculated by volume. Polymeric or joint sand is a different product and should be estimated from the manufacturer coverage chart.
Bedding sand volume formula
A 20-by-15-foot patio with a 1-inch bedding layer contains 25 cubic feet before allowance. That equals about 0.93 cubic yard. With 10% extra, the planning volume is about 27.5 cubic feet or 1.02 cubic yards.

Why more bedding sand is not better
A thick loose sand layer does not replace a correctly prepared aggregate base. Follow the paver-system instructions for base, bedding and compaction. Use the paver base calculator for the structural aggregate layer.
Bulk sand versus bags
For small areas, enter the actual cubic-foot volume shown on the bag. For a bulk order, compare the required cubic yards with supplier minimums and ask whether the quoted material is suitable as bedding sand for the selected pavers.
Joint-sand reminder
Joint width, joint depth, paver shape and product density can change coverage substantially. Do not divide bedding-sand volume by a polymeric-sand bag size. Read the exact coverage table and installation conditions for the selected joint product.
