Concrete cost per yard is only one part of a finished project budget. A useful comparison starts with the same concrete volume and mix specification, then separates delivery, placement and site work that may not be included in the headline rate.
What changes the ready-mix price?
| Cost item | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Base price per cubic yard | Which strength and mix specification does the price cover? |
| Short-load charge | Is there a fee below a minimum delivery volume? |
| Delivery and distance | How far is the project from the plant and what time is included? |
| Fuel or environmental fees | Are surcharges included in the quoted total? |
| Pump or conveyor | Can the truck discharge directly where the concrete is placed? |
| Waiting time | When do additional onsite-time charges begin? |
Example planning comparison
If the calculator returns 3.26 cubic yards, a supplier may require the order to be rounded to its accepted increment. Multiplying 3.26 by a local per-yard rate gives only the material subtotal. Add every quoted fixed fee before comparing that delivery with bagged concrete or another supplier.
Separate material cost from installed cost
An installed slab may also require excavation, aggregate base, forms, reinforcement, joints, finishing and cleanup. Ask whether a contractor quote includes these items and whether concrete delivery is a pass-through cost or part of a fixed project price.
Do not use a national average as a quote
Plant distance, order size, mix, season and local demand can change pricing. Enter current local numbers in the calculator and keep the date and assumptions with the estimate.
Quote checklist
- Required cubic yards and permitted rounding.
- Mix specification and any additives.
- Delivery window and onsite-time allowance.
- Short-load, fuel and distance fees.
- Pump, buggy or wheelbarrow access.
- Taxes, cancellation terms and cleanup responsibilities.
Start with how much concrete you need so every supplier receives the same quantity assumptions.

Verify the project specification
Local conditions, product requirements and project rules can change the final quantity or installation method. For additional background, consult Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association resources, along with the selected manufacturer and local authority.
