The table assumes a uniform finished depth. Real beds are rarely perfectly flat, so the calculated value is a planning quantity rather than a guarantee.
How mulch coverage is calculated
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. If the desired depth is 3 inches, convert 3 inches to 0.25 feet. Divide 27 cubic feet by 0.25 feet and the result is 108 square feet of coverage.
You can also work in reverse. Multiply bed square footage by depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
How much area will 2 yards of mulch cover?
Double the one-yard coverage at the same depth. Two cubic yards cover about 648 square feet at 1 inch, 324 square feet at 2 inches, 216 square feet at 3 inches and 162 square feet at 4 inches.
For 5 cubic yards, multiply the one-yard coverage by five. At 3 inches deep, five yards covers about 540 square feet.
Existing mulch changes how much new coverage you need
Coverage charts are often misused because homeowners calculate the full finished depth rather than the depth being added. If a bed has about 2 inches of serviceable mulch and you want a 3-inch finished layer, calculate only 1 new inch. At that depth, every cubic yard covers about 324 square feet.
Check several locations because old mulch can settle unevenly or decompose faster in wet or sunny areas.
Example: 750-square-foot bed
A 750-square-foot bed at 3 inches deep requires 750 ÷ 108 = about 6.94 cubic yards. At 2 inches deep, the same area requires 750 ÷ 162 = about 4.63 cubic yards. At only 1 inch of new depth, it requires roughly 2.31 cubic yards.

How many bags cover the same area?
First calculate the cubic feet needed. A cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. If one yard covers your target area, that is equivalent to 27 one-cu-ft bags, 18 1.5-cu-ft bags, 13.5 two-cu-ft bags or nine three-cu-ft bags. Round up to a whole bag where needed.
