A retaining wall needs more than the blocks visible from the front. Base preparation, drainage and manufacturer-specific reinforcement can be just as important to the finished structure.

Block count depends on face dimensions
For a quick estimate, calculate the wall face area and divide it by the face area of one block. Add an allowance for cuts, breakage and layout. Corners, curves and special units can change the final order.
Drainage deserves its own calculation
Water pressure is a common retaining-wall concern. The calculator can estimate a simple gravel backfill volume, but the final drainage detail should follow the block manufacturer’s instructions and local requirements.
