Sod is rarely installed with zero waste. Rolls or slabs need to be trimmed around edges, trees, beds, walkways and curves, and some pieces may be damaged during handling. A small ordering allowance reduces the risk of running short midway through installation.
Match the allowance to the layout

Use the supplier’s real coverage
Roll and pallet coverage is not standardized. Grass type, farm, harvest format and region can all change how much area is supplied on one pallet. Enter the supplier’s stated coverage rather than relying on a generic number.
Example
If a measured lawn is 2,000 square feet and you use a 7% allowance, the planning order becomes 2,140 square feet. The calculator can then convert that order area into rolls or pallets using your supplier’s coverage.
Common mistakes
- Subtracting every tiny obstacle and then losing more area in trimming than expected.
- Assuming all pallets contain the same square footage.
- Ordering too early and leaving sod stacked for longer than the supplier recommends.
