Cost per square foot is useful when comparing similar work, but “landscaping” can describe anything from seeding a prepared lawn to rebuilding drainage and installing premium hardscape. The rate is meaningful only after the scope is defined.
Calculate the comparable rate
Divide the total for a clearly defined component by its applicable area. Do not divide a whole-yard quote containing trees, gates and lighting by lawn area and compare it with a sod-only rate.
