How Much Paver Base Do I Need?

Paver base quantity is a volume calculation: surface area multiplied by compacted base depth. The main mistakes come from mixing inches and feet, forgetting irregular sections or treating loose delivered depth as the finished compacted layer.

Calculate the rectangular area

Multiply length by width to get square feet. Divide irregular patios into rectangles, calculate each section and add them together. Curves can be approximated with smaller measured shapes rather than one oversized rectangle.

Convert depth before multiplying

Divide inches by 12 to convert depth to feet. Multiply square feet by depth in feet for cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards.

Example: 20 ft × 15 ft at 4 inches

The area is 300 square feet. Four inches equals 0.333 feet. The compacted volume is about 100 cubic feet, or 3.70 cubic yards, before allowance. A 10% planning allowance raises that to about 4.07 cubic yards.

Convert yards to tons carefully

Aggregate is often quoted by weight. Multiply cubic yards by the supplier density in tons per cubic yard. Density varies by material, gradation and moisture, so the supplier conversion is more reliable than a generic default.

Remember the rest of the excavation

Base depth is not the entire section. Bedding material and paver thickness also affect excavation. Confirm finished elevation, slope and manufacturer details before digging or ordering.
